Scotland County |North Carolina
The airfield was constructed for the United States Army Air Force during World War II. During the war the airfield was a large training base for glider-towing aircraft. Today the airfield is noted for being the home of Charlotte Aircraft, a company which parts-out and scraps older aircraft. Visitors to the airfield can see a number of 727s, DC-10s, and other aircraft in various stages of being dismantled and scrapped.
About Southeast Airport Authority |Our History
This airport has been a staple in the region since it began in 1942 as Laurinburg-Maxton Army Air Base. From 1942-1945 it was the largest Waco CG-4A glider pilot training base in the world.
Looking Forward |Building our Future

Relationship With Community
Our team members live in the area and most of us were raised right around the corner. When you’re here, you’re in our hometown and we want you to experience the best it has to offer.
Our Team |From Commission to Airport Authority
When the army base shuttered in 1945, the Department of Defense granted the airport and facilities to the city of Laurinburg and the town of Maxton. The two municipalities formed a commission to manage and direct the operation of the airport and its surrounding land for the next several decades. The commission was composed of three appointed representatives from each municipality.
In 2020, legislation was introduced in the North Carolina General Assembly that changed the former Laurinburg-Maxton Airport Commission to the Southeast Regional Airport Authority. In addition to three representatives from the City of Laurinburg and three from the Town of Maxton, Scotland County was given one representative, and the Director of Scotland County Economic Development Corporation was given a seat on the board as an ex officio member.
But WHY?! |Why did we choose Laurinburg-Maxton?
The decision to host the Sky High Aerospace Expo and Fly-In at the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport was deliberate and strategic. Let’s explore the compelling reasons behind this choice:
Vast Real Estate: With an impressive expanse of over 4,000 acres, the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport provides ample space for all aspects of the event. From static displays, camping, exhibition spaces, and aerobatic performances, this vast area ensures that attendees and participants have room to explore and enjoy the festivities.
Historical Significance: The airport boasts a rich military history, having served as the largest glider training base in the world during the 1940s. This historical context adds depth and resonance to the expo, connecting modern aviation enthusiasts with the legacy of those who trained here decades ago.
Unrestricted Growth Potential: As the event organizer, you recognize the importance of scalability. The Laurinburg-Maxton Airport offers the flexibility to expand and evolve without constraints. Whether accommodating more exhibitors, increasing attendance, or introducing new attractions, this venue allows our vision to take flight.
Aligned Goals: The collaborative spirit between the airport staff and the airport authority is a critical factor. Their shared commitment to the airport’s vitality aligns perfectly with your vision for the expo’s success. Their enthusiasm ensures a seamless experience for all involved, from vendors to attendees.
Clear Airspace: Safety is paramount in aviation events. The Laurinburg-Maxton Airport’s airspace is free from major obstacles, including competing airport traffic, towering structures, and controlled military zones. This clarity allows pilots to perform daring maneuvers and captivate the audience without compromise.
In summary, the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport combines historical significance, ample space, growth potential, aligned goals, and safety—a winning formula for an unforgettable aerospace expo.
